Dear Calculus Students,
The first 36 lessons of the book are a review of Pre-Calculus topics. Sprinkled in amongst those lessons are 6 calculus lessons on limits and the beginning of the derivative. You are to do all the lessons 1-36 all the questions of each lesson except do not do lessons 16, 19, 24, 27, 33, 34 (stop after completing Lesson 36).
You are to do all your work in a spiral bound notebook with "calculus summer work" written on the front. Work sequentially on each lesson, doing each problem completely and as carefully as you can. Be sure to show ALL YOUR WORK!!! This notebook will be checked the first day of class and will count as 10 homework grades and 1 test grade. We will discuss each of the lessons and any questions you had during class the first week of class. The plan is to discuss 5 lessons per day.
The Saxon book is written to be easily understood by students and uses plain English (not math talk). You sholud have good success. I can also lend you a pre-calculus book if you need one to refresh your brain on some of the topics. I am also giving you a solutions key book. In it each problem is worked out showing the solution, not just the answers. The wise use of this book will deepen your understanding of the pre-cal topics reviewed. If you encounter a question with one of the problems you are to write IN RED what your question is and what it was that confused you. I will be reviewing your summer work. EVERY problem is to be completed and if a question is not answered there should be a comment by you in the space with a detailed memo as to what to ask me in class.
We will have a test over the first 36 lessons (minus the 6 exempted lessons) the second full week of school after we have gone over the assignments in class.
Have a great summer and see you in August!!
In Christ,
Mrs. Julie Edgar
